after so much wild nature we finally arrived in Invercargill and enjoyed the botanical gardens first.

Der Eingang zum Queens-Park (entrance to Queens Park)
Ein wunderschöner Rosengarten... (beautiful rose garden)
...ein verliebtes Pärchen... (well, rose gardens are very special to us :-))
(it was early evening and the softer sunlight proved to be better for some more pictures)

(well, since I could lay my hands on a 35$ analog Pentax P30, I'm happy to take some pictures on film. Sure it takes a bit more effort and time to get them done correctly. Carina was keeping that memory with my digital camera)

(... we'll see if the digital or analog pictures will be better...)

("The Band Rotunda" in the garden, probably for a few concerts )
(Carina and my stomach were constantly reminding me that it's time to eat ;-))
Antworten gerne als Block-Kommentar *g* (I'm not quite sure if animal ghosts are following us or if we are seeing strange things at strange places... what do you see with a little bit of fantasy?)
(since I got a cold we had to rest a few days and went to the japanese garden a few days later...)

...und die Aviary (das Vogelgehege) mit vielen tollen einheimischen und seltenen Vögeln (we also went to the aviary. Pictures are always a bit tricky to take through the narrow fences)
Na, wer war gut in Vogelkunde? (you probably know this bird...)Ein Kakadu... (... I'm sorry my English is limited...)

On our way to Invercargill we got to see Nugget Point, the Purakanui and Matai Falls, Slope Point and Waipapa Point.

(you couldn't drive all the way to the light house but a short walk was certainly worth it.)
Direkt neben dem Wanderweg ging es gaaaaanz schön steil runter (don't step too close to the edge unless you want to go swimming with the sea lions ;-) ):
(Nugget Point received its name through its landscape, the little rocks in the sea are supposed to reflect the setting sunlight in golden colors, thus appearing like gigantic gold nuggets)
Glückliches Pärchen vor Goldstücken ;o) (... but who needs gold when he has found love :-))
it looks very pretty and lots of sea animals are living in this region
Auf dem Weg zu den Purakanui Falls boten sich schon schöne Blicke (after leaving Nugget Point we drove to the Purakanui Falls and again a short bush walk, which was quite beautiful lead us the the falls):
The Purakanui Falls are very picturesque and certainly worth taking a picture of. A long time exposure made this picture possible)
(the Matai Falls which were along our way. It didn't rain much lately and I would assume the falls would be even more stunning if they carried more water with them.)
Abendliche Stimmung (this picture cost me one Sandfly bite. Once you stand still in the evening hours, our little friends find every spot of bare skin to bite into. But it was worth it, fog was settling in the bushes and rays of sunlight illuminated parts of the landscape.)
Am nächsten Tag kreuzten mal wieder zahllose Schafe unseren Weg... (sheep were blocking the road to Slope Point. They got onto a new meadow to eat fresh grass)
(you certainly could have had a coffee until these hundreds of sheep passed the road)
Ein kleiner Abstecher an der Curio Bay vorbei zum Slope Point: der südlichste Punkt der Südinsel (we finally made it to Slope Point, the southern most point of New Zealand, Stewart Island not included of course. Well from now on we are on our way back to Wellington, going "home".)

Hier ist oft recht starker Westwind, was man deutlich an der Vegetation sieht (again we were very lucky in terms of the weather. Usually you would find a very rough sea with waves being several meters high and strong winds coming from the west. The tree down below is shaped by the persistent wind.)
(our next destination was Waipapa Point. )
this light house was the last to be run by men in New Zealand until was automatized completely

After we left Dunedin we took the Southern Scenic Drive to Invercargill. This route offered us to see some other beautiful spots of the Catlins region instead of racing along the SH1 Highway straight to Invercargill.Strand bei Dunedin (surf beach of Dunedin, it was too bad we didn't come here earlier...):
Es geht ganz schön steil bergauf (it wouldn't be called a scenic route if you didn't get some scenery. We were climbing some steep roads to be far above Dunedin):
Es ist nicht viel los am Strand. Dafür sieht man manchmal recht ungewöhnliche Dinge.

We were not quite sure if some fine race horses were getting some exercise or if the locals just love to take there horse out to the beach. Very unusual for us and very beautiful to watch.
(this is one of many of the wonderful beaches in New Zealand, perfect for reading books and enjoying yourself. But it is too perfect to be true, little nasty Sandflys kept biting us and we had to go back to the car.)

Most of New Zealand's larger towns and cities have beautiful botanical gardens, but we were a bit surprised that Christchurch is also called the garden city although most other cities have more beautiful gardens then Christchurch itself. Dunedin is just one of many other cities with a splendid rose garden...

Im Rosengarten von Dunedin (my wife, surrounded by hundreds of roses):Sehr beliebt in neuseeländischen Gärten: Statuen von Fabelwesen- in diesem Falle Peter Pan mit Fee. (It seemed to us that people from fairy tales like Peter Pan are quite common in the gardens)

beeindruckende Kiefern (huge pine trees)
Jürgen in Photolaune (... lovely grasslands):
Im Afrikanischen Garten (blossoms from Africa and lots more could be seen in the botanical garden):
