Below are a few pictures we found while travelling along the West Coast. You can find them anywhere in New Zealand but we believed to see more than usual in this area.

It is the same with any country in the world, they always have to hide something from the public. New Zealand being famous for its untouched and marvellous nature is being poisoned by the hour. Strange though, this is not done by some dubious company spilling their waste water into the rivers or burying toxic wastes in remote places. No, New Zealand is plagued by possums. They've got roughly 60 million of them in their country and they don't know what to do about them. They encourage people to write mails to the government if they have any good ideas! They encourage people to kill any possum on the road by running it over. And until the government and DOC doesn't come up with a better idea, the DOC invests millions to drop toxic pellets by helicopters and planes throughout the country. Some locals agree others disagree. Imagining that the DOC has camp sites for tourists within these areas is actually unbelievable. I'm sure the pellets are not water resistant and will dissolve in rivers poisoning fishes and the unaware tourists. The DOC claims the pellets will only be eaten by possums because they've put in stuff that other animals don't eat. Well, we have seen otherwise.

Lake Matheson, Fox und Franz Josef Gletscher
Am nächsten morgen war super schönes Wetter und noch ein relativ unbedekter Himmel und somit hieß es nur schnell aus den Federn, keine Zeit zum Frühstücken (die Wolken hier sind unberechenbar), sofort an den Lake Mattheson. Dieser ist für seine wahnsinnig tollen Spiegleungen der Berge berühmt. Allerdings können sich Berge nur spiegeln, wenn sie auch zu sehen sind und nicht hinter Wolken versteckt...
Preisrätelsfrage; Welcher Berg ist der Mount Cook und welcher der Mount Tasman?
who ever has seen a couple of pictures by Craig Potton has come across Lake Matheson. Which is rated as a photographers dream to photograph. We were very lucky this morning and had only coffee to go and went straight to the lake.
a picture from the coffee place, people were having breakfast and enjoyed the view:
schnell einen Kaffee auf die Hand und los. Und es hat sich gelohnt. Tolle Spiegelungen im Wasser! (we didn't want to go for anything less than the pictures below. Almost mirror like reflections and the mountains in the background were breath taking )
für ohne Frühstück sehen wir doch eigentlich recht fitt aus, was? ;o) (quite charming, even for this early hour of the day :-) )
still a bit sleepy but quick with the camera :-)
von der Aussichtsplattform die den "View of Views" versprach. Und es war auch wirklich hübsch, auch wenn der See langsam unruhiger und die Spiegelungen damit weniger wurden. (a picture from the "View of Views" I'm very sorry for the slight tilt in the picture but I was tired and haven't even washed my face yet.)
Trotzdem konnten wir noch ein paar grandiose Blicke erhaschen, bevor sich die Wolken langsam um die Berge schlungen. Gut, dass wir so früh los sind... (you really had to be early at the lake. The first clouds were moving in from the right)
Der Mount Cook in groß, langsam mit immer mehr Wolken (Mount Aoraki):
und der Mount Tasman daneben, noch etwas wolkenfreier (Mount Tasman is a bit closer than Mount Aoraki)
Danach ging es nur ca. 20 km weiter bis zum Franz Josef Gletscher. Wieder eine Gletscherzunge und insgesamt sehr ähnlich wie der Fox, aber er hat uns noch etwas besser gefallen. (a bit later we drove on to Franz Josef Glacier and walked up to the glacier itself)
schöne Wasserfälle, die in das Gletschertal strömten (falls similar to the ones we had seen at Milford were rushing down the mountains):
und ein beeindruckender Gletscher (at last, an incredible large glacier. People could book tours to walk upon it and hopefully don't fall into it. Warning signs were keeping the other tourists away not to try their luck too hard.):
mit einem beeindruckenden Mann davor ;o) (that's me, chizz I still look tired ;-) )
... und weiter ging die Fahrt. Wenn man nicht mit den erlaubten 100 km/h, sondern nur 90 unterwegs ist, kann es schon mal sein, dass man von großen Lastern mit Anhängern überholt wird (after seeing the Franz Josef Glacier we drove up the West Coast to Hokitika. The Toxic ahh I mean Scenic Highway was quite ordinary except plenty of 1080 signs telling us not to drink or eat anything from this area. We will make an extra blog entry for 1080 some time later):
laut Lonely Planet soll man sich in Hokitika den Sonnenuntergang ansehen. Und das haben wir dann auch gemacht. (The Lonely Planet suggested for Hokitika to enjoy the sunset and so we did on a very comfy seat.)
... auf dem gemütlichen Sessel. Zwar aus Stein, aber seeehr bequem. (together)
ach, da will man gar nicht weg... (or just alone)
und bekommt Lust, ein paar Turnübungen zu machen *g* (or while exercising)
... während langsam die Sonne unterging. *gähn* (and here it is what we have seen)

An die Westküste zum Fox Gletscher
Von Wanaka aus ging es weiter am wunderschönen Lake Hawea vorbei...
(once we left Wanaka we drove up to Lake Hawea...)
Über den Haast Pass. Dort gab es viele schöne Ecken mit Wasserfällen, Wäldern etc.
Dies nutzten wir für ein paar kleine Spaziergänge... (and drove through the Haast Pass. We stopped to see some native bush and...)
An den Fantail-Falls (the fantail falls...):
An den Gates of Haast (as well as the gates of haast):
An den Thunder Creek Falls (the thunder creek falls):
Die lange One-Lane-Bridge bei Haast (and one hell of a long bridge at haast town):
Knights Point:
Schräge Baustellenarbeiter (ob er ne Wette verloren hat?) (is it carnival yet? This road construction worker seemed to enjoy the day in pink):
Endlich mal wieder eine Straße am Meer: Hier haben sich schon viele Leute auf kleinen Steinen verewigt. Ein sehr schöner Ort. Leider kann man keine 5 Sekunden stehen bleiben, sonst wird man von Sandflys aufgefressen. (back to the beach we found this mysterious place where thousands of tourists as it seemed built little towers of rocks and wrote their names on it.)
Juhu, am Fox Gletscher angekommen. Sehr beeindruckend wie sich die Gletscherzunge ins Tal schlängelt (Von oben haben wir das ja schon gesehen, aber von der Perspektive ist es auch sehr schön). (As we finally arrived at the Fox Glacier we stretched our legs and went for a walk to see the glacier right before our eyes and not from a plane as we did from Lake Tekapo.)
Am Gletscher. Es wird auch gleich etwas kälter... (going any closer was restricted to guided tours due to rock fall and some other dangerous reasons the DOC came up with.)
Na, wen haben wir denn da? Keas beim Nestbau. Gut, dass sie es noch nicht auf unser Auto abgesehen hatten, sondern sich brav mit alten Grashalmen zufrieden gegeben haben ;o) (on our way back to the car we were lucky to see some very curious Keas gathering building material for their nests. Or maybe they were just pretending and were curious about the tourists???)
Ein Stücken weiter von der Zufahrt zum Fox Gletscher ist dann die Stadt "Fox Glacier". NAch einem kurzen schlendern durch diverse Souvenirshops, genossen wir noch den wahnsinnig schönen Sonnenuntergang (close to Lake Matheson - we could enjoy a very pretty sunset and some close by souvenir shops):
... um uns danach bettfertig zu machen, suchten wir noch kurz die öffentlichen Toiletten auf. Wir haben uns gefragt, welches Übersetzungsprogramm das wohl war?!? Etwas peinlich, oder? Typischer Fall von Wort für Wort Übersetzung, wobei ich nicht weiß, wie sie auf die Minute gekommen sind... (back in town we wanted to use the public toilets before we got to sleep. The instructions in English are perfectly fine but the German translation of it is, well, not really a translation at all...)
und das solltest du mit dem Wasser dort alles nicht machen. Gut, dass sie hier auf eine deutsche Übersetzung verzichtet haben ;o) (although in the middle of the small town we were a bit surprised that the water is not to be used for any of the mentioned points below)
