After a couple of days in Christchurch and not too much good weather, we decided it was time to get going again. Our next destination was Erewohn or Edoras well known to Lord of the Rings fans. The LotR crew really did a great job locating incredible places for the movie. Once you drive into the vast valley of Edoras, you are overwhelmed by the view you get. Unfortunately the pictures don't even come close to the original. The weather intensified the remoteness of this very lonely place. But let's start with our trip from Christchurch to Edoras and beyond...

Unser Weg führte uns an vielen schönen Spots entlang. (Once the snow starts melting, these incredible hughe riverbeds are completely filled with bright blue water. The valley below is 1 or 2 km across)
(the only bridge and only way to get across at a very narrow place)
Auf zu dem Mt Potts. (that's our way to Edoras :-) )
(after we left the main road, a few kilometers later we were welcomed by a gravelroad and "wild country")
the plains are almost endless
(lake clearwater is the last place where a couple of houses are, after that it's just gravelroad and a beautiful country)
Dann ging es weiter durch schöne Landschaft und Berge und Schluchten (right infront of us lies Edoras, once we drive down that road we are right in the middle of it)
Jürgen musste alles genau festhalten- Digital und analog! (of course pictures had to be taken now even in the analog format)
Dort ragt uns Edoras entgegen. (this is the hill where the town Edoras and the hall of King Theoden was build upon. The riders of Rohan once roamed this country. It's just too bad that absolutely nothing is left of it)
Auf ging es in das Tal (the above shot was zoomed in, so we weren't exactly there yet. But you can make out that hill on the picture below - right side)
Über Flüsse (we crossed wide river beds which luckily were not completely filled with water yet)
Bis wir endlich dort waren! (... until we finally stood in front of the remains of Edoras)
(after a light shower the sun magically broke through the clouds and illuminated Edoras)
Hier fanden uns grade tausend Schafe sehr interessant. (so far we have seen plenty of sheep on the north island but never so many on such a small place, we did feel a little bit looked at or is it just them)

Akaroa

Since it was raining in Christchurch most of the time, we even managed to do our laundry ;-). And surprisingly we found a little brochure at the laundry place saying there would be a concert in Akaroa, actually a series of concerts. So we went there and enjoyed a wonderful evening with classic music played by very talented musicians. Besides the concert Akaraoa is supposed to be a very beautiful place with a predominant french flair. Unfortunately the bad weather hid quite a bit of the beauty from us.

Bei gutem Wetter ein Traumblick, doch selbst bei schlechtem Wetter schön anzusehen (even in bad weather nice to look at):

Kochen im Auto- so gehts: Es gibt lecker Fisch. (freshly prepared fish for dinner, we had to cook inside the car due to the persistant rain)

Abends beim Konzert. (at the concert, the musicians including their instruments varied. The violin, harp, piano, flute and others were used for compositions by Mozart, Debussy, Weber and Ravel)Blick von unserem Schlafplatz in Akaroa auf das Wasser. (even the next morning was quite cloudy)

The peninsula wich Akaroa is part of offers a summit route, but as you can see the clouds are extremly low we had no chance of taking that route without getting stuck in dense clouds.
Kurz vor der Fahrt in den Nebel: (shortly before we enter the clouds, no more pictures from there on, sorry)

Botanischer Garten Christchurch

Christchurch calls itself garden city so we went to the botanical gardens and had a look around. The garden is quite beautiful but not as big as we would have expected it to be, in terms of the garden city New Zealands. Nevertheless we saw a great variety of flowers, trees and other plants.

Schöne Blumen, überall *g* (a flower wall as high as Carina)
... große Eukalyptusbäume...

big eucalyptos trees
Kakteenlandschaften... (succulents tall and small)

Viele Weihnachtssterne und andere Blümchen... (and plenty of other plants)
Ein Gewächshaus mit Bananenpflanzen... (huge banana trees)
Blick auf den Rosengarten (us in the front and the rose garden in the background)
Jürgen überreicht eine Rose ( a rose for Carina from me, it was just a bit too large for the van so we had to leave it in the park)
Ein Blumenmeer... (a see of flowers with all colors imagineable)

a close up shot of a blossom
Am Eingang zum Rosengarten (the entrance to the rose garden, you'll be surprised how many different roses there are):
