very warm welcome to Oamaru

Oamaru ist ein nettes kleines Städtchen mit ca. 12.000 Einwohner, also eine gute Größe für Neuseeland um mit allem wichtigen ausgestattet zu sein.
Außerdem besitzt Oamaru viele schöne, alte Gebäude, so das tatsächlich ein Hauch von altertümlichem Flair über der Stadt hängt. Viele laufen hier in den traditionellen Kostümen von vor 100 Jahren (? ich habe in Geschichte nicht aufgepasst, können auch nur 50 Jahre sein *g*) herum und das Leben hier ist einfach gemütlich...
Außerdem gibts hier süße Pinguine ;o)

Oamaru is one of the smaller or maybe bigger towns in New Zealand with roughly 12,000 inhabitants. But Oamaru has a unique history in terms of buildings and limestone. While wandering through the streets you will be surprised to see beautiful buildings in Victorian style, most of them were build with limestone. It certainly is not a real tourist place but I guess it'll become one sooner than later because of its beauty. The Botanical gardens are certainly worth a visit and the historic part of the town is just as beautiful. The people are very friendly and love their heritage so much, they even dress up in Victorian clothing giving you the impression of travelling back in time.
Oamaru is known for its blue penguin and yellow eyed penguin colonies as well, so it's not just history. Have a look at the pictures and enjoy...

Wir haben das einzige OAMARU Auto in Neuseeland gesehen ;o) (too bad it's not an oldtimer but the one car with the real OAMARU license plate)

Auch das I-Site ist in einem tollen alten Gebäude (even the i-Site is within an old building):

Im I-Site konnte man testen wie es ist, auf einem alten Fahrrad zu sitzen: ich war begeistert wie ihr seht *g* (and within the i-Site you could try one of the first bicycles ever, very cool...)Hier gibt es sogar einiges an "Industrie" und die Bahnstrecke führt direkt am Meer entlang (the only not so beautiful thing in Oamaru is that they have built the rail road along the beach, which makes the beach useless. But the trains passing through the town are quite interesting never the less)

Na, was ist wohl in diesen großen Ballen? Heu? NEIN Wolle! (you won't see that too often in Germany, sheep wool neatly stacked and a lot of it)
Wir haben gefunden, was wir schon aufgegeben haben zu suchen! ECHTES SAUERTEIGBROT wie zu hause- WAHNSINN!!!! (one more reason why Oamaru is a wonderful place, we finally managed to find real European bread, it looks good and tastes really great)
und zwar in dieser Bäckerei. *ein Traum* ich streiche mir noch über den Bauch!! (one of the places we like to enjoy ourselves, a bakery on the left where you can buy the bread from above and a café on the right where you can get one of the best coffees and hot chocolates)

Oamaru ist dazu noch für die Pinguinkolonien bekannt.
Es gibt Gelb- und Blauaugen Pinguine. Für die Blauaugen Pinguine muss man allerdings Geld zahlen, darum haben wir uns entschlossen erst mal nur die Gelbaugen-Pinguine anzusehen. Diese gehören zu den seltensten der Welt. Hier in Neuseeland darf man sie bestaunen, wie sie abends an die Küste heranschwimmen und in ihr Übernachtungsquartier watscheln- sehr süß *g*.
Einige Tage später haben wir dann erfahren, dass man sich die 2x20$ Eintritt auch sparen kann und sich einfach abends auf eine STraße stellt und wartet. Das haben wir gestern abend gemacht und haben nach einigem Warten richtig viele Blauaugen Pinguine gesehen. Wir konnten sogar Photos und Videos machen (im Gegensatz zur Tour wo das nicht erlaubt ist). Leider sind die Bilder alle unscharf, weil es schon ziemlich dunkel war und man nur ohne Blitz Photos machen soll. Aber die Videos sind ganz gut, werdet ihr später sehen *g*.

Sterne schauen

Darauf hat mein kleiner Sternengucker lange gewartet: Ein wolkenfreier Himmel.
Und dafür sind wie extra noch einmal den Weg zurück zum Lake Tekapo gefahren. Und wir hatten Glück. Die Tour, die wir ein paar Tage zuvor gebucht hatten konnte tatsächlich stattfinden (nachdem vorher alle Touren gecancelt wurden und nur eine "behind the szene tour" angeboten wurde).
Es war kein Wölkchen am Himmel und Jürgen konnte sich seinen beiden Hobbys witmen: Photographie und STerne schauen.
Und für einen Nicht-Profi sind tolle Bilder herausgekommen, findet ihr nicht? ;o)

As we arrived at Lake Tekapo a couple of days ago we weren't really blessed with good weather. It was either raining or cloudy. But we wanted to see the stars since Tekapo has almost no interfering lights from other cities, there are not too many place in the world where you can get such a great view at the night sky. We therefore came back from Mt. Cook to do the stargazer tour and we were rewarded for our patience with a beautiful night sky. I was especially happy to take pictures on a tracking mount which follows the stars as they move across our horizon. To bad that we had only two hours, starting from midnight. There was so much to see and learn...

If you want to see such a sky, you really have to get outside the big cities and find a place where it is actually dark. Then just wait until your eyes adjust to the darkness (it's a good idea to bring a chair and warm clothes) and you might see such a sky.

Fliegen ist schön...

Neuseeland ist ein schönes Land, das wissen wir ja inzwischen. Leider gibt es jedoch Orte, die nicht für normalsterbliche mit Auto oder Wandern erreichbar sind.
Die Alpen, die Gletscher und der Mount Cook gehören dazu. Und somit entschlossen wir uns, dass uns dies einen Flug wert ist, um mal alles aus einer anderen Perspektive sehen zu können.
Unser Flug startete am Lake Tekapo und wir bekamen u.a. den Mt. Tasman und Tasman Gletscher, den Mt. Cook, den Fox Gletscher und den Franz Josef Gletscher zu Gesicht. Nach unserem langen Regentief hatten wir Glück- es gab zwar ein paar Wolken, aber die Bedingungen waren fast ideal und wir hatten tolle Blicke aus dem Fenster.
Wir waren in einer kleine Maschine unterwegs mit nur 6 Sitzplätzen und da auch kein anderer Fluggast mehr kam, hatten wir quasi einen Privatflug und konnten an beiden Seiten zu den Fenstern herausschauen! SUUUUUPER! Lehnt euch also in eurem Sessel zurück, stellt euch ein paar Fluggeräusche vor und fliegt durch die BIlder! ;o)

New Zealand is country full of beautiful walks, climbs, boat tours and also flight tours. We decided to take a flight across the most impressive glaciers New Zealand has to offer. We could have climbed them and even taken a boat across the glacier lakes, but we never could have seen so much and shared it with you. Our flight started close to Lake Tekapo and went along the red line on the picture below. Please have a quick look at airsafaris for specific details. We seemed to be lucky that day as we had good weather and were the only passengers on board. That ment plenty of space in the plane as it was just a six seater. Das Observatorium auf dem Mt John, wo wir am Abend noch Sterne schauen wollen. Drumherum ist nichts, so dass hier keine Lichter von Städten stören könnten. (The Mt. John observatory is just around the corner and one of the best places to be at a star lit night. You can guess what our planes were for the night)
Der Lake Pukaki (Lake Pukaki, our altitude was roughly 1500m over ground and I hardly managed to the lake onto one picture. This glacier lake is really big!)

Danach ging es erst mal wieder zum Lake Tekapo, um auf die Sterntour am Abend zu warten. (we were lucky this night and all the clouds disappeared, we enjoyed the sunset and particularly I couldn't wait for the stargazer tour to begin ... )
Lake Tekapo is certainly one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand
So langsam wurde es dunkel und man konnte einen schönen Mond sehen... (the night was coming and we began to see the universe around us. O.k. it is just the moon but more is coming :-) )
