Botanischer Garten Christchurch

Christchurch calls itself garden city so we went to the botanical gardens and had a look around. The garden is quite beautiful but not as big as we would have expected it to be, in terms of the garden city New Zealands. Nevertheless we saw a great variety of flowers, trees and other plants.

Schöne Blumen, überall *g* (a flower wall as high as Carina)
... große Eukalyptusbäume...

big eucalyptos trees
Kakteenlandschaften... (succulents tall and small)

Viele Weihnachtssterne und andere Blümchen... (and plenty of other plants)
Ein Gewächshaus mit Bananenpflanzen... (huge banana trees)
Blick auf den Rosengarten (us in the front and the rose garden in the background)
Jürgen überreicht eine Rose ( a rose for Carina from me, it was just a bit too large for the van so we had to leave it in the park)
Ein Blumenmeer... (a see of flowers with all colors imagineable)

Christchurch

After coming down the east coast which is a very scenic drive we had our next stop in Christchurch. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side (you only get to see the sunny pictures) and it started to rain for a couple of days. Well, we used those to update our blog and recharge our depleted batteries. Whenever the sun was outside we walked through the city and enjoyed a very britsh New Zealand city.

Auf dem Weg an der Küste entlang (from Kaikoura to Christchurch):

In Christchurch. Am Cathedral Square (Christchurch Cathedral, quite impressive from the inside with a nice choir which we enjoyed at a Sundy mass)
Die Milleniumsstatue (The Chalice):
Hört einfach was er so schreibt...

(a couple of blogs ago we showed you Carina's heaven of wine and chocolate and here is mine now. A photo store where I finally found a gradual ND filter plus plenty of old and new cameras, nice accessories and everything an amatuer photographer would look for :-) )

Es gab viele tolle Kameras, besonders viele Leicas. Damit kann man meine Oma extrem begeistern! (That's and old Leica camera made of wood and metal, the price tag is for another camera in the top right hand corner)
Fressmeile von Christchurch (one of the many restaurants in Christchurch):
Die Bridge of Remembrance (the Bridge of Remembrance at sun set taken with Carina always be with you camera):
(we just missed this wedding but were lucky *heartsmelting* to see the photographer taking some shots of the newly wed couple *can'twaittohaveours*)
(one of the many attractions in Christchurch is the tram which shows you parts of the city and explains it's history. If you are hungry you can even get on a restaurant in a tram)

(New Zealand is loved my many Germans and Germans are loved for their good food. It's just too bad that Bavaria only represents Germany in the world. ;-) )
Eifrig am Verhandeln *g* (Carina found a couple of necklaces she wanted and was hoping for a good price, but even her charming character couldn't soften this man :-) )
Pinguine auf einem Bus. (Penguin tours, Antarctic tours, Lord of the Rings tours or Glacier tours, you can book pretty much everything in Christchurch)
Blick vom Cathedral Square in die andere Richtung auf das I-Site und Starbucks (ne Laura *g*) (Starbucks and the i-Site both share a very beautiful building)

Before we could get on board a whale watching tour due to cancellations we explored the surrounding area of Kaikoura. The Fyffe house below is a remnant of the whaling era Kaikouras.

Interessante Anordnung der Steinplatten (very obscure rock formations at the sea):schöner Blick aus dem Auto *g* (Carina is very patient with me, once I start taking pictures I always see something new and interesting and sometimes she has to drag me into the car ;-) )
Auch hier gibt es eine große Seehundkollonie (fur seals are found along the Kaikoura region, I believe a sign said that roughly 100k are living here. Before they were hunted roughly 1m could be counted):
(The Kaikoura peninsula rises by 2cm a year, which is very much if you image the landmass)
I'm sure that's not a local in the air):
Schmierereien am Wegesrand *g* (Exactly what we think!!! :-) )

After a couple of tries to get on board a whale watching tour - some were cancelled due to harsh weather conditions, sea sickness warnings and alike - we finally managed to get onto one. Actually it was raining in Kaikoura but once we got on board and went out onto the sea we had fairly good weather. The catamaran was speeding across the water and whenever we hit a wave the water splashed at least 3 to 4 meters high. I believe just one person got seasick in the back rows and showed his dinner ;-)
We were very lucky to see three whales, plenty of dolphins and a couple of albatrosses - enjoy the pictures

Unser Boot (our pretty fast boat):
Wir bekamen 3 Sperm-Wale ganz dicht zu Gesicht und ein paar von weiter weg (our first whale, we have never seen one alive before):
(it is hard to imagine by its tail how large the whale actually is)
Und hier die Flosse unseres dritten Wales;
I believe hector dolphins which can only be seen in New Zealand):
... und Albatrosse (the majestic Albatross with a wingspan of over 3m ):
(those dolphins were having a good time and jumped out of the water like a frog would leap forward. They must be really strong and good swimmers)
Und die Delphine waren "in a good mood" und haben uns auch ein paar Kunststückchen gezeigt.
(Henry and Emilie showed us a little duet ;-) )
(hold fast because this boat almost took of... *splash*)

After we returned from our whale watch tour we saw the freshly fallen snow on the mountains and were immediately reminded of back home and their winter time.
Jürgen wird noch zum kleinen Trainspotter ;o). (another train - it was just beautiful)
