Kein Tag ist wie der andere...: Kaikoura und Whale Watching

Am Montag sollten wir um 6.45h unsere Waltour beginnen. Aufgrund der unruhigen See wurde diese jedoch abgesagt und wir auf eine Warteliste für den Nachmittag gesetzt...
Tja, und somit hatten wir noch echt viel Zeit, die wir nutzten, um den Wanderweg an der Ostküste bei Kaikoura etwas zu erkunden.

Before we could get on board a whale watching tour due to cancellations we explored the surrounding area of Kaikoura. The Fyffe house below is a remnant of the whaling era Kaikouras.

Das Fyffe-House ist um 1860 erbaut und das einzige Überbleibsel der Walfangzeit hier in Kaikoura.

Interessante Anordnung der Steinplatten (very obscure rock formations at the sea):

Auch hier gibt es eine große Seehundkollonie (fur seals are found along the Kaikoura region, I believe a sign said that roughly 100k are living here. Before they were hunted roughly 1m could be counted):

Wir hatten einen tollen Blick auf die Küstenlandschaft und die Peninsula. Durch die Plattenverschiebungen hebt sich diese Gegend um 2 cm pro Jahr. (The Kaikoura peninsula rises by 2cm a year, which is very much if you image the landmass)

Auch in der Luft kann man Spaß haben (I'm sure that's not a local in the air):

Der Wanderweg führte uns oben direkt and der Klippe entlang:

Um 15 Uhr hatten wir dann auch Glück mit unserer Waltour. Wir waren die ersten auf der Warteliste und damit bei der Tour dabei! *juhu*!
Ich war schon ganz aufgeregt, endlich gings los. Schließlich haben wir 3 Tage darauf gewartet und gebangt, dass das Wetter hält. Als die Tour losging war es auch ein wenig am Regnen, aber auf dem Meer draußen schien dann zum Glück die Sonne.

After a couple of tries to get on board a whale watching tour - some were cancelled due to harsh weather conditions, sea sickness warnings and alike - we finally managed to get onto one. Actually it was raining in Kaikoura but once we got on board and went out onto the sea we had fairly good weather. The catamaran was speeding across the water and whenever we hit a wave the water splashed at least 3 to 4 meters high. I believe just one person got seasick in the back rows and showed his dinner ;-)
We were very lucky to see three whales, plenty of dolphins and a couple of albatrosses - enjoy the pictures

Wir bekamen 3 Sperm-Wale ganz dicht zu Gesicht und ein paar von weiter weg (our first whale, we have never seen one alive before):

Das ist das Highlight: Wenn der Wal abtaucht und dabei noch mal seine Schwanzflosse in die Höhe streckt!

Obwohl man nur etwa 10% des Wales sehen kann, wirkt er trotzdem schon sehr gewaltig!

Und hier die Flosse unseres dritten Wales;

Außer den Walen bekamen wir aber noch viele andere Tiere zu Gesicht, unter anderem die Delphine (dolphins I believe hector dolphins which can only be seen in New Zealand):

... und Albatrosse (the majestic Albatross with a wingspan of over 3m ):

bei Albatrossen muss ich immer an den Film "Bernhard und Bianca" denken ;o) Na, wer kent ihn?

Delphine sind toll, weil sie gerne ganz aus dem Wasser springen und man den ganzen Delphin sieht und nicht nur 10%! (those dolphins were having a good time and jumped out of the water like a frog would leap forward. They must be really strong and good swimmers)

Und die Delphine waren "in a good mood" und haben uns auch ein paar Kunststückchen gezeigt.

Drinnen im Boot hieß es immer gut festhalten, denn so gegen die Wellen ging es schon gut auf und ab! (hold fast because this boat almost took of... *splash*)

Und dann waren wir auch schon wieder zurück bei unserem Startpunkt... Schöne Sachen vergehen immer wie im Fluge.

Das Wetter hatte sich zum Glück gut gehalten. Auf den Bergen konnte man allerdings einiges an Neuschnee sehen.
After we returned from our whale watch tour we saw the freshly fallen snow on the mountains and were immediately reminded of back home and their winter time.
