New Zealand is country full of beautiful walks, climbs, boat tours and also flight tours. We decided to take a flight across the most impressive glaciers New Zealand has to offer. We could have climbed them and even taken a boat across the glacier lakes, but we never could have seen so much and shared it with you. Our flight started close to Lake Tekapo and went along the red line on the picture below. Please have a quick look at airsafaris for specific details. We seemed to be lucky that day as we had good weather and were the only passengers on board. That ment plenty of space in the plane as it was just a six seater. Enjoy what we have seen from the plane on both window sides:

Unsere Flugroute, für Interessierte nachzulesen unter (our flight route actually slightly differed, we did not go along Lake Tekapo on the right and did not reach #8 and #7. We took the shortcut to lake pukaki and spent more time in the glacier region): http://www.airsafaris.co.nz/
Unser Flugzeug und Pilot (our ride, the copilot was taking the picture):
(The Mackenzie country is famous for its hydropower stations and canals)man konnte dem Piloten direkt über die Schulter schauen (I just wanted to check whether the pilot was doing everything right and quickly glanced at the instruments ;-):
(carina jumped from one side to the other, it was hard to decide which offered the better view)
Der Lake Tekapo mit dem Dörfchen Tekapo. (This is Tekapo with its 300 people. But they do have a 7 mil $ telescope because of its fabulous location)
(The Mt. John observatory is just around the corner and one of the best places to be at a star lit night. You can guess what our planes were for the night)
Der Lake Pukaki (Lake Pukaki, our altitude was roughly 1500m over ground and I hardly managed to the lake onto one picture. This glacier lake is really big!)
Am Anfang der Berge. Unten sieht man das Dörfchen Mt Cook Village (as we come closer to the glaciers, you can see Mt. Cook Village, which is a good starting point for most walks, climbs and boat tours.)
Beeindruckende Berge, bitte einfach genießen... (we peeked deep into hidden valleys and over high mountains)
Der Gletschersee des Tasman Gletschers (Größenvergleich: man sieht auch ein Häuschen am Ende des Wanderweges) (we even did a walk from the crossing, which consists of a parking lot and a shelter to the rim of the green parts - top left way - it was hard to image how large the icebergs are)
The tip of Mount Cook in all its glory and danger. Many people died trying to climb all the way to the top
glaciers coming down from the mountains
Direkter Flug auf den Mt Cook (the pilot was showing us where we will pass Mt. Cook 3700m, we were going around and did not fly over it)
... da ist er... (side view of Mt. Cook)

Fox Gletscher (as we passed Mt. Cook we got to see the other glaciers like Fox Glacier...):

Franz Josef Gletscher (Franz Josef glacier...):

im Hintergrund: Gletschersee Tasman Gletscher (and the Tasman glacier with its lake in the background. If you wanted to see all this on foot, you would be walking for weeks :-) )
Ein Haus mitten auf dem Berg (this little retreat is not a private one but the Hooker Hut. Some people do actually climb up here and have a shelter, which can prove live saving in bad weather.):
(Can you spot the Hooker Hut?)
rivers from other glaciers run through valleys and combine to even bigger rivers...
Eisschollen im See (... until they come together at glacier lakes. No its not an animal just two icebergs and one has a hole in it)
the above icebergs are on the right side. you can compare them to the barely visible crossing on the left side
Die Stunde ging rum wie im Fluge *haha* (our flight is almost over and you might remember this valley from another picture before)
(we were lucky this night and all the clouds disappeared, we enjoyed the sunset and particularly I couldn't wait for the stargazer tour to begin ... )
Lake Tekapo is certainly one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand
(the night was coming and we began to see the universe around us. O.k. it is just the moon but more is coming :-) )

Cook in seiner ganzen Pracht sehen konnte.
Genießt die Bilder

Since the evening sky over Lake Tekapo was always cloudy we drove on to Mount Cook and spend two days in that region. We were lucky to see the tip of Mt. Cook and did a walk in the National Park.
(The Mackenzie Country is extensively being used for water power. The canal below connects Lake Tekapo with Lake Pukaki)
Unser erster Blick auf den Mt Cook (Mt. Cook with the canal infront)
Am See Pukaki hatte man einen malerischen Blick auf den See und den Mt. Cook dahinter. (picturesque landscape, it is hard to believe that Lake Pukaki is used as a reservoir for water power. The construction of the water power systems, canals, etc. roughly took 18 years)
(dam wall controls the flow of water from Lake Pukaki, which runs through huge turbines with thousands of horsepower)Auf einigen Infotafeln konnte man alles genau nachlesen: (at an i-Site, you could read up most information on the canal country. New Zealand looks like wild nature but is tamed by humans)
Pärchen vor dem Mount Cook. (happy couple in front of Mt. Cook - life is wonderful... )
Cook National Park (you drive along a mountain range to get to Mt. Cook)
Gletscher: (this is not Mt. Cook but a glacier nearby, you can even make out "The Hermitage" on the bottom left)
(with clouds all around Mt. Cook showed itself from its best side)
Cook Valley (we had lunch at a little village very close to Mt. Cook)
(unfortunately after our lunchtime the weather decided to be wet and uncomfortable. But nothing could stop us from doing a little walk to the Tasman glacier lake and watch some big icebergs floating in that lake. I guess if we had more global warming there would be no icebergs at all)
Riesige Eisschollen schwammen im See: (these icebergs look small but they are like huge rocks)
Abstieg: (on our way down from the lookout point on the Tasman lake)
Zurück in das Dörfchen: (back to the little village with a glacier in the background. Those glaciers are higher than 3000 meters )
kleine Sonnenlöcher wurden sofort zum Photos machen genutzt: (the Aoraki/ Mt. Cook National Park looks even more stunning with the right sunlight and without the rain)

After leaving Edoras and the riders of Rohan behind we drove through Geraldine all the way to Lake Tekapo which lies in the Mackenzie Country. You might want to google the Mackenzie Country and find out why it is called like that... Lake Tekapo is known to many astronomers as the region offers easy access to a well situated observatory on Mt. John which has a seven million dollar telescope on top. Anyways the bad weather was following us or we were following the bad weather and we therefore didn't get a chance to see the night sky or book a star gazing tour. Thus we decided to do some walks and drive on to Mt. Cook.

(On our way from Edoras to Lake Tekapo we stopped in Geraldine and had a look at the largest sweater of the world. We even had a look at a medieval mosaic which you should look up at www.1066.co.nz it is a piece of math, art and history which took 25 years to complete)
Am Lake Tekapo, ein toller See umrahmt von Bergen (Lake Tekapo one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand and a 101 must do's for Kiwi's - it certainly is worth a visit)
Die Church of the good Shepherd ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Tekapo. (The Church of the good Shepherd is the landmark of Tekapo)
(we had a chance to enjoy a couple of sunrays before the clouds covered the sky for the rest of the evening)
Vom Mt. (we quickly drove up Mt. John to get a 360 degree view over the area. Down below is lake Alexandrina where we stayed for the night)
Klarer, ruhiger See. (once the sun started to disappear behind the horizon, the wind settled down and the lake almost looked like a mirror)
(incredible view across Lake Tekapo, it certainly was a wonderful evening)
(Hermann, whom we met at Edoras is playing the guitar, Carina is on the right )

(lake Alexandrina in the early morning hours)

(On the next day we decided to walk up Mt. John. )
(Carina is taking a video shot on top of Mt. John)
3 Wochen Ehe und immer noch glücklich ;o) (3 weeks of marriage and still happily married - it's our honey moon time :-) )Das Mt. John Observatory (Mt. John observatory, although we didn't get to see the 7 million dollar telescope, we believe it to be under the left dome)Der höchste Punkt am Mt John (the geographical landmark on Mt. John)
Weiter gehts den Wanderweg entlang zum See hinunter. Gute 300 Höhenmeter liegen zwischen Mt. John und See. (on our way down from Mt. John we hiked along the lake and met nice people from all over the world)
Abendstimmung. (The Church of the good Shepherd at dusk)
