Finally after one week in Invercargill it was time to get going again. We drove along the Southern Scenic Route to Riverton...

... über Riverton... (just an old church in Riverton)
... an sehr seltsamen Schildern vorbei... (kann uns das jmd erklären? Ist Campen jetzt erlaubt oder nicht?!?) (came along pretty beaches with strange signs. Usually if camping is not allowed, the symbols are crossed out, but in this particular case we were not sure what was meant...)
... ein kurzer Zwischenstop bei Monkey Island... (one very important stop was Monkey Island, I never assumed I would ever see the little Island which should ring bells by everyone my generation. You should have heard about it during childhood, especially in connection with computer games :-))
... Jürgen war sehr begeistert. Es gab wohl in seiner Jugend (also schon echt lange her *g*) ein Computerspiel, das so heißt...
... eine kleine Wanderung an den Rakatu Wetlands. Jürgen musste sofort an seinen alten Biolehrer denken... (the Rakatu Wetlands are a very beautiful place. I know my old biology teacher would have loved this place. Well it's just too bad that this place was artificially created by men. New Zealand nature is very impressive but you always have to look twice whether human hands helped a little )
(this is McCrackens Rest, a beautiful shore with great waves...)

...eine Hängebrücke bei Clifden... (an old and unused suspension bridge near Clifden)
(we arrived at Manapouri in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at the lake. We enjoyed a wonderful sunset and were happy that we booked a boat trip for the next day to see Doubtful Sound)
(Carina in full multi tasking mode. She made some Ravioli and was coming down to the lake shore, while filming the sunset.)

Bluff

After I finally recovered from my cold we made a quick trip to Bluff. We considered going to Stewart Island but the ferry prices put us off. We don't have the proper equipment to do multiple day walks and therefore would be able to spend only one day on Stewart Island. It certainly is a wonderful place to be but if you can't get around the island it would be foolish to go there. So we didn't and drove back to Invercargill.

(Aside from fishing an aluminium smelter can be found and hardly any tourists. They are all on Stewart Island ;-))
Am Stirling Point. (Stirling Point is part of the Southern Scenic Route)
Naja, wenn man keine berühmten Leute hat, dann bastelt man sich welche ;o) (Stirling Point was named after Captain William Stirling who let a whaling station being built)

(You can see Stewart Island from the outlook in Bluff)

Invercargill

Unfortunately I got a cold and we had to spent a week in Invercargil until I fully recovered. We took it quite easy and went to the local library to recharge our batteries or even to watch a movie. We also went into the museum and art gallery which is in the same house. The largest Tuatara with 1.2kg is in there but we only saw the smaller ones. We strolled through the city and were quite surprised by the amount of Döner/Kebab - turkish fast food restaurants. There are plenty of those places in Germany and we had to find out whether they are as good as ours.

(the museum and art gallery. Taking pictures inside the gallery was not allowed and well I didn't feel like breeching that rule ;-))
Invercargill Downtown:

Invercargill Downtown - monuments certainly are a speciality of New Zealand, you find them everywhere
Der Wasserturm (the historic water tower):

Die erste Kirche (the first church of Invercargill):
Das Theater (the theatre, too bad we didnt't get inside):
Die Basilica (the basilica, we didn't get inside either):
(our dirty clothes were piling up inside our van and it was time to do our laundry again. Invercargill has only two public laundries and this one was the only one open. It sort of put us off but we had to use it...)
(out of ten washing machines only four worked, the dryers weren't any better. But if things are cheap then you can't ask for luxuries)

Eine komödiante Aufführung der alten Stücke *g* (at least we were greatly compensated for in the Queens garden with Shakespeare in the Park. Three guys were performing a hilarious play - Shakespeare, Hamlet and friends...)
Natürlich bekommt er es von mir vorgelesen *g* (since my voice was too hoarse, my lovely wife read to me)
(Well, I hope I do not offend any New Zealanders but your country is a place where young adults could not live without their cars. No matter how old and dented, all their cars are souped-up, exhaust pipes look like those of big trucks and believe me they sound like big trucks too. The older the adult the more expensive the car looks like, it is either a Holden race car or a huge 4WD. Germany sucks in case of 4WD because they only sell you more or less a car with huge tires on them. Germans actually don't need 4WD because there is hardly ever a place you couldn't drive on with a wheelchair. The Autobahn is good for fast cars which on the other hand New Zealanders don't need. You are not allowed to go faster than 100 km/h. But just as the Lonley Planet writes about Invercargill, people tend to have too much time and therefore local girls style their hair while the boys pimp their rides...)

after so much wild nature we finally arrived in Invercargill and enjoyed the botanical gardens first.

Der Eingang zum Queens-Park (entrance to Queens Park)
Ein wunderschöner Rosengarten... (beautiful rose garden)
...ein verliebtes Pärchen... (well, rose gardens are very special to us :-))
(it was early evening and the softer sunlight proved to be better for some more pictures)

(well, since I could lay my hands on a 35$ analog Pentax P30, I'm happy to take some pictures on film. Sure it takes a bit more effort and time to get them done correctly. Carina was keeping that memory with my digital camera)

(... we'll see if the digital or analog pictures will be better...)

("The Band Rotunda" in the garden, probably for a few concerts )
(Carina and my stomach were constantly reminding me that it's time to eat ;-))
Antworten gerne als Block-Kommentar *g* (I'm not quite sure if animal ghosts are following us or if we are seeing strange things at strange places... what do you see with a little bit of fantasy?)
(since I got a cold we had to rest a few days and went to the japanese garden a few days later...)

...und die Aviary (das Vogelgehege) mit vielen tollen einheimischen und seltenen Vögeln (we also went to the aviary. Pictures are always a bit tricky to take through the narrow fences)
Na, wer war gut in Vogelkunde? (you probably know this bird...)Ein Kakadu... (... I'm sorry my English is limited...)
