Milford Sound is one of the 101 Must-Do's for Kiwi's. Well we are not Kiwi's but of course we had to see Milford Sound. In New Zealand there is a dispute whether Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound is better. Decide for yourself while browsing through the pictures. But first some impressions on our way to Milford - for you, especially without the annoying sandflies :-) ...
Kleine Flüsse am Straßenrand (small rivers along the road, which can become big rivers after heavy rain):
pristine waterfalls with the purest Water you can imagine
(shortly before the Homer-tunnel, we saw a huge plate of ice and snow with a big cave entrance. We didn't go inside due to falling ice and rocks, a little waterfall at the back was melting the ice)
(here you can see the waterfall coming down the mountain)
Ausgang Hoomer Tunnel. (right after we passed through the Homer tunnel we were surrounded by clouds until we drove far enough down the road to get below the clouds. This is the valley leading to Milford...)
(... and here he is, Milford Sound with Mitre Peak and its roughly 1700meters hight in the background. Well we were a bit surprised that it looked somehow different than on most postcards. Of course the weather is not too god but we also arrived at low tide. That's why the water is missing in front.)
Ein kleiner Fluss an unserem Übernachtungsplatz. (It was late in the evening and there wasn't much to do except avoiding hundreds of sandflies who kept coming into our van whenever we opened a door. They don't really care about the whether, unless there is really heavy rain they keep flying around biting. By the way it's only the female fly that sucks blood from all creatures running or flying around in that area. This is a little river close to where we spent the night)

Before you make up your mind that Doubtful Sound is prettier than Milford Sound, wait up for our boat trip the following day. Every place can look quite different if the light is right...
