Glenorchy und HDR

Glenorchy liegt gute 40 km entfernt von Queenstown am Ende des Sees. Die Straße dorthin hat viele schöne Ecken, an denen es lohnt anzuhalten und sich umzuschauen. Und schon hat man einen Tagestrip...

After three days in the public library in Queenstown we had to get out and get some fresh air again. We weren't quite sure whether we should do a Lord of the Rings tour or not and so we decided to do things on our own. You simply have more time and can stop wherever you like to take pictures or simply enjoy the day.

Tja, was soll ich sagen. Um Übernachtungskosten zu sparen, gehen wir meist nicht auf einen Campingplatz, sondern übernachten an irgendwelchen anderen Orten.
Manche Orte sind toll und haben extra einen Platz für "freedom Camping", wo man weiß, dass man dort kostenlos Übernachten kann. Meist gibt es ein Plumsklo, was völlig reicht.
Andere haben dies nicht, aber man kann sich einfach vor irgendeinen Park oder etwas ähnliches Stellen und dort die Toiletten nutzen.
Es gibt auch DOC-Campingplätze, die das Department Of Conservation zur Verfügung stellt. Diese Unterscheiden sich in ihrer Ausstattung. Für die Basicplätze (Klo, sonst nichts) wird kein Geld verlangt. Wenn man einen Standartplatz findet, muss man zwischen 3-15$ zahlen für eine sehr unterschiedliche Ausstattung.
Der DOC Campingplatz bei Queenstown gilt nun als Standart, obwohl es ein Plumsklo und frisches Wasser aus dem See gibt, SONST NICHTS. Mhh, komisch, warum also nicht Basic, fragen wir uns?
Und warum man dann bei solch einer schlechten Ausstattung trotzdem noch 7$ pro Person zahlen soll, haben wir auch nicht ganz verstanden.
Das allerschärfste war jedoch die Straße, die sie uns hoch- und runterjagen wollten, damit man zu diesem Platz kommt. So eine schlechte Straße sind wir selten (nie) gefahren und wir haben uns gewundert, wie große Mobile den Weg nach unten schaffen

(Well what can I say, Carina has written so much concerning our nightly stays that I am speechless. The problem is, Queenstown has no freedom camping areas in the whole Queenstown Lake District Area. After our first night close to the Queens Park we were informed about that by a nice gentleman hammering at our window in the early morning. We were lucky it was just a warning. We don't like to stay at camp sites because we are off the whole day and need only the toilets and a place to park. There are enough public toilets in New Zealand that you could export them to Germany which is one further reason why we don't need a camp site. The cheapest camp sites are usually run by the DOC and since there was one around we did not hesitate to at least have a look. The whopping 7 dollars per person were already putting us off. We only need to park over the night nothing else. The next picture shows you where to pay and... )

this picture shows you where you had to drive. Unfortunately the picture doesn't show the big holes and how steep that road is. It is said the steepest road is Dunedin but we were not so sure any more. This DOC should be only for 4WD at least in our opinion, very disappointing!

*mhh*, eigentlich war das als öffentliches Klo ausgeschrieben?!? (We are sure due to too many tourists, the Queenstown Lake District is trying to save itself... I mean it's just a toilet and luckily we didn't see any cameras in there)
Die Müllabfuhr ist etwas moderner als in Deutschland. Mal schauen, wann in Deutschland das Personal durch einen Greifarm ersetzt wird... (New Zealand certainly knows how to surprise you over and over. You think you are at one of the most remote places in NZ and then you see a fully automatized garbage truck. There is just a driver in it not one more. I can see even more jobless people in Germany now)

Rund um Queenstown wurden viele Szenen aus HDR gedreht... Dank unsers (mäßig gutem) Guidebooks waren wir bestens im Bilde und voller Motivation alles zu erkunden... Leider machte uns (mal wieder) die Private Property (privater Besitz) einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Tja, toller Hügel, aber leider darf man da als normal Sterblicher nicht rauf... Und so nett sahen die Leute auch nicht aus, als dass wir uns mit ihnen anfreunden wollten.
Also beschlossen wir, einfach nur die Gegend zu genießen... (I told you earlier that we didn't want to book a LotR-Tour because we like to discover things on our own. Well, in that case we discovered private property, actually Deer Park Heights. The complete area must have been bought and there was no chance on getting in there. Somehow Queenstown looks more and more like little rip off place to us, if you don't jump from bridges or out of planes you even have to book a tour for seeing nature. This is strategic tourism at its best which is saddest for us. Well, we were still enjoying ourselves so we didn't care.)
